So, patients with IBS are generally classified according to the type of bowel habits predominance that accompanies pain or discomfort.

Stool form is based on the Bristol stool form scale that categorizes stool form and correlates best with colon transit times(1).

Patients also complain of bloating or feeling of abdominal distension, mucus in the stool, and a bnormal stool passage (straining, urgency, or feeling of incomplete evacuation).

The proposed new subtyping based on stool consistency alone is(1):
1. IBS with constipation (IBS-C)
2. IBS with diarrhoea (IBS-D)
3. IBS mixed type (IBS-M)
4. IBS unsubtyped (IBS-U)
